Billy-Montigny [bili mɔ̃tiɲi] is a French commune located in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Billysiens. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération of Lens-Liévin.
A little history
In Gallo-Roman times, the town was called Billiacum. Around the year 360, the town, along with most of Artois, was evangelised by saint Martin, a former legionary, and around the year 500, Billiacum ceased to be a tributary of Rome. Around the 4th century, the town was invaded by Normans who had come from Scandinavia, and it would take a century for the town to recover from these invasions. Subsequently, in 877, the town was invaded once again, this time by comte Baudouin Ier de Flandre, of the comté de Flandre.
