Billy-Berclau [bili bɛʁklo] is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Billy-Berclausiens. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération de Béthune-Bruay, Artois-Lys Romane.
A little history
The name Billy-Berclau appears for the first time around 1024/1025 in the chronicle of the bishops of Cambrai, which mentions the founding of a prévôté by an abbot of Saint-Vaast d'Arras named Leduin. The territory of the commune is described there in the following words. "There exists [...] a village by the name of Berclau belonging to the possessions of Saint-Vaast, situated in the marshes, ideal for livestock rearing owing to sufficient pasture and likewise entirely suitable for the use of the monks." The creation of a secondary monastic establishment at Berclau made it possible to oversee the draining of the marshes and the development of the lands held by the abbey.
