A little history
Neanderthal man occupied the region, near Arras, 200,000 years ago. Flint tools knapped into bifacial prondnik points dating from the Last Glacial Period were uncovered in former sand quarries at the Mont de Beuvry. Barbed points made of bone and deer antler (dated to around 10,000 BC) were found at Béthune and Beuvry, along with more recent tools in the marais de Beuvry (7,000 to 5,000 years BC, from the Mesolithic period).
