Bessan (Beçan in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Hérault, the ruisseau de l'Ardaillou, the ruisseau de Laval and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, two Natura 2000 sites (the « cours inférieur de l'Hérault » and « est et sud de Béziers »), one protected area (the « Bessan ») and six natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Around 600 BC, the Greeks settled at Bessan on the oppidum de la Monadière to trade. In 218 BC, Hannibal, the Carthaginian general, crossed the region with his army and his war elephants, to go and attack the Romans, passing between Bessan and Montblanc.
