Bégard [begaʁ] is a French commune situated in the département of Côtes-d'Armor in the region of Bretagne. It is part of the traditional pays of Trégor (more precisely the Grand Trégor), which belongs to the Breton-speaking part of the region. In Breton, the name of the commune is Bear.
A little history
The megaliths of Bégard suggest that the area was inhabited at the end of the Neolithic period. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the commune had three menhirs, but two of them (that of Pasquiou and that of Saint-Norvez) have disappeared. Only the menhir de Kerguézennec remains in place. The abbaye de Bégard, a Cistercian abbey, was founded in 1130.
