Bédarieux [be.da.ʁjø] (in Occitan, Bedarius [be.da.'riws] and Becderius) is a French commune, situated in the centre of the département of Hérault in the Occitanie region. The town, surrounded by the monts d'Orb, backed up against the plateau de l'Escandorgue in the parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc, is the meeting point for the inhabitants of a living area extending across 30 communes where 25,000 inhabitants lived in 2012. Bédarieux is situated close to the A9 and A75 motorways.
A little history
During excavations carried out in the quartier des rues Basses during the 1910s, Roman coins from the 4th century were discovered, suggesting the existence of a Gallo-Roman villa in this area. The town's archives also hold numerous documents tracing the management and operation of the town, the earliest mentions of which date back to the 12th century. Built at the crossroads of road communication routes, at the confluence of the river Orb and the torrent Vèbre, it was highly sought after. Noted for the rise of a flourishing industry from the end of the 12th century, the town saw manufacturing activities develop rapidly.
