Beaugency is a French commune situated in the Loiret department in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its inhabitants are known as the Balgentiens. The commune is situated within the boundaries of the Val de Loire, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and holds the Les Plus Beaux Détours de France label.
A little history
The site of Beaugency has seen early human occupation. The butte des Hauts-de-Lutz, to the west of the present-day town, revealed a Mousterian workshop dating from the era of Neanderthal man. The settlement appears to have been frequented extensively by hunter-gatherers of the Epipaleolithic period, who left traces of their intensive flint-knapping activity, the characteristics of which constitute the "beaugencien" facies. Traces of Gaulish occupation have been noted at this same location.
