This new commune was created on 1 January 2013 through the merger of the five former communes of Baugé, Montpollin, Pontigné, Saint-Martin-d'Arcé and Le Vieil-Baugé, which became délégué communes. Its chef-lieu is established at Baugé.
A little history
A megalithic site is present at Baugé, bearing witness to the earliest human occupation of this territory. It is the dolmen de La Pierre-Couverte. It consists of a single chamber, preceded by a vestibule, and its two table stones rest on five supports. Numerous prehistoric remains have been discovered there. At Pontigné, twenty-two polished stone axes, two menhirs (destroyed) and a dolmen (the Pierre-Couverte) were found. At Saint-Martin-d'Arcé, ten polished stone axes and a menhir (Pierrefrite) were found. At Le Vieil-Baugé, a polished stone axe was found.
