Batz-sur-Mer (pronounced [bɑ syʁ mεʁ]) is a commune in the West of France in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region. It is situated on an island which, until around the 9th century, remained separated from the sillon de Guérande and the neighbouring island of Le Croisic. The territory of the commune today forms part of the côte sauvage of the presqu'île guérandaise, with rocky cliffs and sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean side, and a wide expanse of salt marshes to the north-east and east.
A little history
During the construction of the railway line from Saint-Nazaire to Le Croisic, flint tools dated to the Middle Palaeolithic (Mousterian) were found in a layer of peat beneath the dunes, near the moulin de la Falaise. On that occasion, remains of ancient elephants and large mammals were also uncovered, without it being possible, based on the data available today, to establish any links between these two discoveries. Other Mousterian flints were found in situ by Henri Quilgars in the area of the plage Valentin. These finds are the oldest evidence of occupation of the presqu'île guérandaise.
