Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire is a commune in south-west France located in the département of Charente, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It resulted from the amalgamation, in 1973, of the commune of Barbezieux and that of Saint-Hilaire. Its inhabitants are called the Barbeziliens and the Barbeziliennes.
A little history
The seigneury of Barbezieux was one of the most important in Saintonge and its lords laid claim to the title of princes. The first known lord is Alduin Ier, who lived at the beginning of the eleventh century. His descendants succeeded one another until the middle of the fourteenth century, in the person of Henry de Barbezieux. In this lineage one may mention Richard de Barbezieux, a celebrated troubadour, and Audouin IV, who supported Aimar d'Archiac in his struggle against the comte d'Angoulême, but whose son Itier II signed an agreement on 20 July 1239 leaving to the comte Hugues de Lusignan the seigneury of Merpins, whilst retaining feudal rights over Roissac, Marville and Gensac.
