Baixas covers 18.9 km², lies between 51 and 312 m above sea level and had 2,777 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Baixas [baʃas] is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the ruisseau de la Boule, the Coume Clare and by another watercourse.
A little history
The aven de la Cova de l'Amaga la Dona, situated to the north-west of the commune and discovered in 1976, reveals vestiges from the Copper Age, dated to 1,800 years BC, and including notably the remains of at least 52 individuals as well as flints, various ornaments and fragments of Bell Beaker vases. The place of Baixas is mentioned in 901 among the possessions that Leudovinus, former viscount of Narbonne deposed in 878, and his wife Arsinde transferred to their children. After the death of Leudovinus, Arsinde and her children sold Baixas and its church in 925 to the bishop of Elne.
