A little history
On 20 April 1792, the legislative assembly declared war on the "king of Bohemia and Hungary". During the first contact with the enemy at Baisieux on 29 April, the troops of the French army scattered and fell back en masse towards Lille. General Théobald Dillon was killed by a gunshot, following the suspicion of treachery occasioned by the order of retreat commanded by the commander-in-chief of the army of the North, Dumouriez. This retreat turned into a rout owing to the panic that took hold of a large part of the troops. This event is known as "le pas de Baisieux".
