Baillargues (in Occitan, Balhargues) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Hérault in the Occitanie region, and a member of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Cadoule, the Bérange, and the ruisseau d'Aigues-Vives. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of a zone naturelle d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique.
A little history
As soon as they had conquered the Mediterranean part of Gaul (120–118 BC), the Romans organised the province known as "Narbonnaise" (from the Alps to the Pyrenees). During this Roman period, they created in particular the famous voie Domitienne. It is less than 2 km from this road, which passed through the site of Déméter, that a Roman named Ballius had a villa built, a large house with outbuildings, within a vast agricultural estate.
