Baho, the town
Baho covers 7.9 km², lies between 39 and 90 m above sea level and had 3,231 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Baho [ba.o] is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally, the commune is part of the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Têt, the ruisseau de la Boule and by another watercourse.
A little history
The first mention of Baho concerns a request for recognition of ownership made in 843 by a woman named Ravella, wife of Protasius, to Suniaire Ier, comte de Roussillon, which would be granted to her. Ravella and Protasius are undoubtedly the parents of the first abbot of the abbaye Saint-Michel de Cuxa, also named Protasius. Later, the territory of Baho was given in 988 by the comte Oliva de Besalù to that same abbey.
