Bages covers 12 km², lies between 14 and 91 m above sea level and had 4,560 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Bages is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Réart, the Agouille de la Mer, the ruisseau du Dilouby and by another watercourse.
A little history
Remains of Roman dwellings dated from the 1st to the 3rd century have been found in the north-western part of the territory of Bages, at Mas Nou and at Vulpilleres. In the 12th century, Bages was home to one of the five dignitaries of the chapter of Elne, who owned a Palau e casa (castle and house). The four others lived in Baixas, Elne, Saleilles and Trouillas. The seat of a lay lordship, Bages was incorporated into the marquisat d'Oms in 1767.
