Azille [azij] is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Aude, in the region of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Minervois, a land of low hills stretching from the Cabardès to the west, to the Biterrois to the east, and from the Montagne Noire to the north, down to the river Aude to the south. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the Aude, the Argent-Double, the ruisseau de Canet, the ruisseau de Naval, the ruisseau de l'Aiguille and various other small watercourses.

A little history

Azille contains, in many parts of its territory, the vestiges of civilisations that have succeeded one another from Prehistory to the present day. The cremation tombs from the Iron Age, whose excavation findings are held at the musée d'Olonzac, the superb Roman villa of the serre de Billery, whose statue of a Silenus of Greek type that could be a representation of the satyr Marcyas is on display at the musée archéologique de Narbonne, as well as the numerous sites recorded across its territory, all bear witness to this. The recent discovery of a Visigothic necropolis on the outskirts of the village points towards a settlement on its current site from the earliest centuries.
