Arvert, the town

Arvert (pronounced [aʁ.vɛʁ]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Alvertons and the Alvertonnes. Taking advantage of its situation at the heart of the presqu'île d'Arvert and the Royannais, on the continental fringe of the côte de Beauté and on the edge of the famous oyster-farming basin of Marennes-Oléron, between the Seudre, the Gironde and the Atlantic Ocean, Arvert is a small urban centre with a residential character on the western "greater outskirts" of Royan, focused on tourism, commerce and services.
A little history
Inhabited since the Neolithic period, the site of the present-day commune of Arvert was formerly limited to a thin strip of land situated between two marine inlets. Although a first village appeared in Roman times, it was not until the 12th century that it grew in importance and saw a monastic community established there, which restored the church thanks to a gift from the lord of Mornac. Shortly afterwards, Arvert became an independent lordship, encompassing within its jurisdiction numerous parishes, those of Trembledam (today La Tremblade), Notre-Dame de l'Isle (today Étaules), Chaillevette, Les Mathes, and also the parish, now vanished, of La Roche.
