In the Armentières area, an agricultural settlement from the Early Iron Age was excavated at La Chapelle-d'Armentières, at the place known as Route Nationale. With regard to lordships, in the Middle Ages Armentières was first held by a seigneurial family of that name. Léon d'Armentières, son of Jean d'Armentières and grand-maître de Flandre, had as his heiress daughter Clémence, who married Hellin Ier de Mortagne, fl. 1226, younger brother of the châtelain de Tournai Évrard IV Radoul (two sons of Baudouin de Tournai).
