Arles-sur-Tech [aʁl syʁ tɛk] is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the region of Occitanie. Historically and culturally, the commune is part of the Vallespir, a former viscountcy (encompassed in the Middle Ages within the viscountcy of Castelnou), attached to France by the treaty of the Pyrénées (1659) and corresponding approximately to the valley of the Tech, from its source to Céret. Exposed to an altered Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Tech, the Riuferrer, the rivière de Bonabosc, the rivière del Freixe and by two other watercourses.
A little history
Following the destruction of the first abbey by the Normans (around 858–868) and despite several attempts at reconstruction, the monks eventually left the site of the Roman baths (today Amélie-les-Bains) at the initiative of Suniefred (abbot from 880 to 891) for the present-day site of Arles, on the banks of the Tech. Mention of the new monastery dedicated to Sainte Marie is found as early as 934 (cenobium Sancte Marie Arulas, in Valle Asperi, super alveo Techo). The commune of Fontanils was attached to Arles-sur-Tech on 10 March 1823.
