Ardres covers 13.5 km², lies between 2 and 17 m above sea level and had 4,389 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Ardres (sometimes called Ardres-en-Calaisis) is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the région of Hauts-de-France. Its inhabitants are called the Ardrésiens. The commune is a member of the communauté de communes Pays d'Opale.
A little history
Between 1060 and 1070, Arnold, lord of the seigneurie de Selnessa-Ardres and vassal of the comte de Guînes, raised a motte in the middle of the marsh upon which he built a wooden keep. He was the son of the first lord of the said seigneurie, Herred, a close associate of comte Eustache de Guînes, and of Adèle, niece of the bishop of the Morins (see seigneurs d'Ardres). In 1096, Arnould II d'Ardres took part in the First Crusade. His name appears in the fifth hall of the crusades at the château de Versailles.
