Aniche, the town
Aniche covers 6.5 km², lies between 26 and 71 m above sea level and had 9,963 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Aniche is a French commune situated in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. The commune, located in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin, long depended on coal extraction. Fourteen mine shafts were sunk on its territory, eleven by the Compagnie des mines d'Aniche and three by the Compagnie des mines d'Azincourt. The commune also had a glassmaking industry, with nine glassworks established on its territory.
A little history
At the beginning of the 12th century, the abbaye de Marchiennes held the altar and the tithe, which had previously been taken from it by Anselme le Barbu, comte d'Ostrevent, whose successors made amends. Aniche and Auberchicourt long shared the same lords. The gouache (opposite), probably painted in 1603, appears in the Albums de Croÿ and forms part of a vast collection of topographical paintings produced at the request of duc Charles de Croÿ. An oval presenting a bird's-eye view of the landscape is framed at its four corners by four male figures in the nude. Those at the top are shown from the front and those at the bottom from behind.
