Allonnes is a French commune situated in the département of Maine-et-Loire, in the région of Pays de la Loire. The current commune dates from 1842, from the merger of the former boundaries of Allonnes and the former neighbouring commune of Russé.
A little history
The area of Allonnes has been inhabited since the Neolithic, as evidenced in particular by the discovery of a stone axe. During the Gaulish periods, from the 2nd to the 1st century before our era, and then the Gallo-Roman period, the sites were reoccupied. The remains indicate a vast artisanal and commercial settlement, the overall surface area of which was between 10 and 20 ha. It was situated in the eastern part of the territory of the Andécaves (a Gaulish people occupying broadly the Anjou), on the borders of the neighbouring Turon (région of Touraine) and Picton (Vienne) territories.
