A little history
Aire is mentioned for the first time in 847, when it was no more than a villa occupying a slight rise to the north of the present-day town. The town developed around the castrum that Baudouin II, comte de Flandre, had built around the year 900 at the confluence of the Lys and the Mardyck to resist Viking raids. This castle, of which nothing remains, was situated on the current site of the places des Béguines and de Saint-Pierre. The settlement developed along the road from Arras to Saint-Omer, which makes a right angle at the place known as « ad crucem Arie ».
