A former chef-lieu de canton and former seat of a communauté de communes, Aigrefeuille-d'Aunis remains, by virtue of its demographic and economic weight, one of the three principal urban centres of the Pays d'Aunis alongside Surgères and Marans.
A little history
Although, during the Gallo-Roman period, a Roman road passed to the south of Aigrefeuille-d'Aunis, no evidence of human occupation from that era has been found there. One must wait until the early Middle Ages to find the first traces. This Roman road, named Le Grand Chemin, well attested in the Peutinger table and by archaeological excavations, linked Angériacum, the present-day Saint-Jean-d'Angély, to the presumed site of the Port du Plomb, at L'Houmeau via Muron and Le Thou.
