Abscon [apskɔ̃] is a French commune situated in the département du Nord in the Hauts-de-France region, in the arrondissement de Valenciennes, to the west of Denain.
A little history
40 million years ago, an inland sea covered Abscon and its surroundings, which makes its subsoil calcareous. In the Roman era, the place was surrounded by an immense forest. When the Romans invaded the region, they settled in the old dwellings abandoned by the Gauls. They noticed that they were well protected by the surrounding woods and called the place Abscondinium, Absconditum meaning "hidden".
