Vivier-au-Court is a French commune situated in the département des Ardennes, in the Grand Est region. The inhabitants are known as the Vivaroises and the Vivarois. Like the neighbouring commune of Vrigne-aux-Bois, it is an important place in the history of Ardennes metalworking.
A little history
On the territory of this commune, traces of settlements or burials from ancient periods have been noted on several occasions. Merovingian burials were uncovered in 1914 at the lieu-dit les Tumains, remains dating from the first Iron Age were identified in 2007 at the lieu-dit la Couturelle, as well as in 1999 at the lieu-dit la Boutillette, along with ceramics dated to the Bronze Age. The frontier position of this territory subsequently manifested itself over the following centuries through the passage of armed bands entering the kingdom of France, and the necessity of securing the hamlets by fortifying the churches.
