Carignan, formerly Yvoy or Yvois until 1662, then Ivoy-Carignan, is a French commune situated in the département des Ardennes, in the Grand Est region. Its inhabitants are called les Yvoisiens and les Yvoisiennes.
A little history
The name Eposio or Epoisso, of Celtic origin (Epo=horse), suggests human occupation predating the Roman period. The site of Carignan has been occupied at least since the Roman era. It was known to the Romans under the name Epoisso Vicus. It was also a stopping point on the Roman road from Reims to Trèves and appears as such in L'Itinéraire d'Antonin.
