Rethel is a French commune, a sub-prefecture of the Ardennes département, in the Grand Est region. Under the Ancien Régime, it was part of the province of Champagne. Watered by the Aisne, it is, with its 7,778 inhabitants in 2022, the third largest town in the département after Charleville-Mézières and Sedan.
A little history
"Rethel spreads gracefully from the top of a hill down to the river Aisne..." Victor Hugo (Le Rhin, 1836). This river Aisne, which runs through the town at its centre, is the cause of numerous conflicts (siege of Rethel (1411), 1423, 1543, 1590, 1617, 1650, 1652, 1653, 1814, 1870, 1914, 1940). According to a legend, its founding is said to be due to Jules César, who is said to have established his camp there. But it is above all a ford, owing to the slowing of the Aisne at this point, and the town exists for that reason.
