Givet covers 18.4 km², lies between 95 and 224 m above sea level and had 6,364 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Givet (in Walloon Djivet) is a French commune situated in the département des Ardennes, in the Grand Est region. Its inhabitants are called the Givetois. Givet is the last river town situated on the Meuse before Belgium.
A little history
Legend has it that saint Hubert lived in Givet in 720 and performed a miracle there. From the 9th century onwards, the Meuse made it possible to send iron, copper, tin and ceramic goods to England and Russia. Like the other Walloon towns, Givet was incorporated in 855 into Lotharingia, then into the Holy Roman Empire. At the end of the Middle Ages, Givet belonged to the prince-bishops of Liège and housed a secondary episcopal residence.
