Fumay is a French commune, located in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region. Fumay, situated in the parc naturel régional des Ardennes and on the border with Belgium, is sometimes called la cité de l'ardoise in reference to the material that brought it prosperity in the 19th century.
A little history
It is said that saint Materne, an evangelising monk, established in the 6th century, on the site of a Roman location near the Alyse, a chapel that he dedicated to the Virgin, known locally under the name of Notre-Dame de Divers-Monts. It is also said that he built it after having killed, so it is told, le fameux serpent qui terrorisait les bois de Fumay. The first inhabitants are said to have then settled around this building, served by the monks of the collégiale de Molhain.
