A little history
During the Franco-German War of 1870, from 30 November to 2 December 1870, the Bataille de Champigny took place on the commune's territory, on the site of the Ikea store. This battle marked the principal attempt by the armies of the Gouvernement de la Défense nationale to break out from under the walls of besieged Paris following the capitulation of Napoléon III. It took place around a château occupied by the Germans, which the 80,000 men sent onto the plateau briard by général Ducrot were meant to dislodge in order to break through the Prussian lines. The battle, fought in appalling conditions at −10 °C with snow-covered ground, saw the deaths of 9,000 French soldiers and 3,000 German soldiers.
