Ivry-sur-Seine covers 6.1 km², lies between 28 and 68 m above sea level and had 65,064 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Ivry-sur-Seine is a French commune situated in the département of Val-de-Marne in the Île-de-France region. Bordering Paris, the town forms part of the Métropole du Grand Paris. Situated on the left bank of the Seine, approximately 5 km from the centre of Paris, the commune had parts of its territory incorporated into the 13e arrondissement of Paris on two separate occasions during the 19th century. Still moderately urbanised at the beginning of the 20th century, the commune experienced significant demographic growth, reaching more than 62,000 inhabitants in 1975. It subsequently underwent industrial decline, which reduced its population to 50,000 by the end of the 1990s.
A little history
The earliest remains attesting to human occupation on the territory of Ivry-sur-Seine date back 4,200 years before the Christian era. Remains of traditional houses built from raw earth loaves and wood were discovered between 2017 and 2023 at two sites in the Confluences district, a village surrounded by an enclosure and significant to the culture of Cerny, making this area one of the most remarkable for Neolithic archaeology in the Paris region. In 52 BC, Ivry was the scene of fighting between the troops of Camulogène, commander of the army of the Parisii, and those of Labiénus, lieutenant of Jules César, who emerged victorious.
