Villerupt is a town in north-east France, the chief town of a canton in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the Grand Est region, situated to the south-east of Longwy. Its inhabitants are known as the Villeruptiens. The commune has the distinction of being inhabited by a large majority of descendants of Italian immigrants.
A little history
The founding of Villerupt is as impossible to determine as it appears ancient. The frequently accepted hypothesis is that Villerupt was populated as early as the Neolithic period (between 4500 and 1700 BC). If, in 1284, Anselme de Villerupt and his family were vassals of Count Henri III of Luxembourg, it was from the Count of Bar that, in 1333, the Malberg family, lords of Audun-Le-Tiche, held Cantebonne and Villerupt as a fief. During the Middle Ages, the history of Villerupt mirrored that of this border region, known as Lorraine from the 9th century onwards, tossed between the kingdoms of France and Germania.
