Lunéville (in Lorrain Roman, Leneinvile) is a French commune in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle. Situated in the historic and cultural region of Lorraine, the commune is today part of the administrative region of Grand Est. It is located some thirty kilometres from Nancy, the prefecture of the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle. A residence of the Dukes of Lorraine and Bar, it is known for its château, nicknamed the Versailles lorrain.
A little history
Lunéville emerged from obscurity in the 10th century. Previously, there had been at the confluence of the Meurthe and the Vezouze only modest huts that served as hunting lodges. A first château de Lunéville was built to protect the crossing point formed by the bridge over the Vezouze, on the salt route that salt merchants and traders took between Rosières, Vic-sur-Seille and Marsal on one side, and Deneuvre, Alsace and Bourgogne (Franche-Comté) on the other. The seigneury thus found a source of income by levying a toll at the bridge crossing.
