Pont-à-Mousson [pɔ̃tamusɔ̃] is a commune in north-eastern France, in Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the Grand Est region. Its inhabitants are called the Mussipontains. By turns a stronghold, an advanced town or a frontier land, Pont-à-Mousson has often had to suffer the hardships of war.
A little history
Objects bearing witness to occupation of the riverbanks of the site have been found during regular dredging of the Moselle, well before the founding of the town proper. These include daggers, lances and fragments of pendant necklaces, typically characteristic of the Hallstatt culture. In Gallo-Roman antiquity, the region lay on the border between the tribes of the Leuques to the south and the Médiomatrices to the north. The main trading route between these two peoples did not pass through the current site of Pont-à-Mousson. The Roman road crossed the Moselle by means of a footbridge, a little further south, at the level of Dieulouard (at the time called Scarpone).
