Longwy covers 5.3 km², lies between 250 and 396 m above sea level and had 15,679 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Longwy (the g is silent) is a Lorraine town in the north-east of France, in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Grand Est region, and is the chief town of the canton of the same name. It is watered by the Chiers, a tributary of the Meuse. It is one of the principal towns of Meurthe-et-Moselle.
A little history
Before the Roman conquest, the site of Longwy and the Pays-Haut belonged territorially in all probability to the tribe of the Leuques, a Celtic people settled between the valleys of the Meuse and the Moselle. Their capital was located at Nasium (present-day Naix-aux-Forges, near Bar-le-Duc). The Leuque territory covered the south of the present-day Meuse, the north of Meurthe-et-Moselle and extended as far as present-day Longwy, that is to say the boundary with the Celtic tribe of the Trévires (around Trèves and Luxembourg) but also with the Médiomatriques. Longwy was therefore a frontier zone between these tribes, at the crossroads of three major Celtic spheres of Belgic Gaul.
