Toul and the surroundings of the Moselle contain ancient prehistoric settlement sites. Tullum is a Gaulish city, capital of the Leuques, situated on the left bank of the Moselle close to a large island. Ambitious in scope, the Gallo-Roman town encompassed eleven hectares within its first palisade. Although the area intra muros was filled in during the first decades of its existence, it was one of the largest cities in Roman Gaul.
