From the Neolithic period, regular human presence took place on the site of Clairlieu and continued through to the Bronze Age, as attested by several items found by MM. Barthélemy, Bleicher and Guérin. In the Middle Ages, the seigneur de Remicourt held rights of justice over his fief of Villiers. Historians affirm that a gibbet was erected at the place known as « La Justice ».
