Villeneuve, sometimes Villeneuve-d'Aveyron, is a French commune situated in the département of Aveyron, in the région of Occitanie, in the south-west of France, at an altitude of 410 metres. It extends over more than 6,500 hectares. The commune holds the label Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
A little history
Villeneuve, in Occitan Vilanòva, owes its origins to the pilgrimage to the Holy Land, in Jerusalem, made by the local lord, Ozile de Morlhon, mindful of the salvation of his soul and that of his ancestors, who, in a deed of donation drawn up in Jerusalem, offered the Patriarch Sophronius the right to build, on his "reddish" lands of Aveyron, near Mauriac, a monastery operating under the rule of the Saint-Sépulcre, for which the Patriarch would receive a gold bezant every year. This was in fact the founding of what would later become Villeneuve.
