A little history
Villeneuve-de-Marsan is mentioned for the first time in 1272, in a document of the Recogniciones feodorum in Aquitania — a collection of acts from the English administration of Gascony — by which Arnaud-Loup de Lasserre acknowledges owing to the king-duke deveria — dues — apud Villannovam. It is possible to think, however, that the town was founded at a considerably earlier date, and that its development was favoured by the qualities of the site, well protected to the east by a natural escarpment. It was also fairly close to an ancient villa from which mosaics were discovered in 1861 and upon which a church, now disappeared, was built.
