Mont-de-Marsan, in Gascon Lo Mont de Marsan [lu.mũⁿ.de.mar.sãⁿ] (Lou Moun), is a commune in the south-west of France. It is the chef-lieu of the département des Landes, in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Founded in the Middle Ages around its three rivers on the Vézelay route of the chemin de Compostelle, Mont-de-Marsan was the principal fortified town of the Landes.
A little history
Excavations have revealed that the area situated between the two rivers has been occupied intermittently since the Palaeolithic. Chance discoveries by archaeologists appear to attest to the presence of a no doubt significant group of Neolithic farmers at the level of the medieval castrum, situated on the promontory of the Midouze. The location at the confluence of the rivers was indeed favourable to the establishment of populations. Archaeological excavations carried out in the 1980s and then in the 2000s revealed significant occupation during the Bronze Age.
