A little history
Dax is surrounded by prehistoric and protohistoric sites, including le Lanot, le Gond, l'Oustalot, and others. Remains have been discovered in the town centre during construction works, indicating that it was inhabited before the Christian era. Thirty-five settlement sites have been identified, eight of them very clearly. Before the arrival of the Romans, the settlement of Aquae Tarbellicae (water of the Tarbelles) was a lake dwelling of the Aquitanian people known as the Tarbelles Quattuorsigni, built around the hot spring dedicated to their deity Nèhe.
