Saint-Paul-lès-Dax [sɛ̃ pɔl lɛ daks] is a commune in the South-West of France located in the département des Landes, in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called les Saint-Paulois. Belonging to the agglomération de Dax, it is the fourth largest commune in the département by population, after Mont-de-Marsan, Dax and Biscarrosse.
A little history
The hamlet of Saint-Paul, situated on the right bank of the Adour opposite the town of Dax, has its history closely linked to that of the town. Its particular position makes it an advanced defensive post for the town and the obligatory route towards the Haute Lande. The three valleys of the Rancès, the Mahourat and the Ardy are the seat of an agro-pastoral economy. The names of the particular sites of Bilain and Vielle attest to the presence in these places of Gallo-Roman villas, and recent research has revealed the reality of a craft activity involving the extraction of iron ore at Abesse as early as the 2nd century of our era, with the presence of low furnaces.
