A little history
The Foire de Chignat, formerly known as the Foire aux melons, is one of the oldest in France. It is mentioned in writings dated 1303. This event takes place every year in September, in front of the Château de Chignat. In 1195, the seigneurie of Vertaizon, which belonged to the troubadour Pons de Chapteuil, was attacked by the bishop Robert de Clermont, who was then at war with his brother the count Guy II d'Auvergne, a close friend of the lord of the cité.
