Verrières-le-Buisson [vɛʁjɛʁ lǝ bɥisɔ̃] is a French commune in the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. Situated in the north of Essonne and bordering the Hauts-de-Seine, Verrières is only ten kilometres south-west of Paris and is sociologically close to the communes of the first ring. Verrières-le-Buisson, which is today known to Parisians for the forêt de Verrières and the rural character of the vallée de la Bièvre, was already frequented in the 18th century by the kings of France for their hunting pursuits.
A little history
The discovery in the bois de Verrières of remains of Palaeolithic and Neolithic workshops attests to human presence in the area from that period. Further to the east, on the boundary with Bièvres at the edge of the Sygrie, the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa rustica were discovered. In 543, the Merovingian king Childebert Ier donated the Villa Vedrarias to the abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés, which had recently been founded. The first written mention of Verrières-le-Buisson is thought to date from the year 806.
