Vernouillet is a commune in the département des Yvelines, in the Île-de-France region, in France, situated approximately 13 km to the north-west of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and 29 km from the Porte Maillot (Paris). Its inhabitants are called the Vernolitains.
A little history
Despite conflicting sources, it was probably on 25 September 1870 that the Ville de Florence, one of the first ballons montés used to leave Paris in spite of the encirclement, carrying the aeronaut Gabriel Mangin and his passenger, a certain de Lutz, a government commissioner, bound for Tours, took off from the champ de la Glacière, boulevard d'Italie in Paris, which was then under siege by the Prussians. After travelling 30 kilometres and owing to Prussian gunfire, the balloon had to come down in the grounds of the château de Vernouillet, where local inhabitants helped Mangin to hide his folded balloon. The aeronaut subsequently managed to reach Tours.
