Saint-Germain-en-Laye (pronounced [sɛ̃.ʒɛʁ.mɛ̃.ɑ̃.lɛ]) is a French commune situated 19 km to the west of Paris in the département des Yvelines in the Île-de-France region. Since 1 January 2019 it has held the status of commune nouvelle following the absorption on that date of the commune of Fourqueux. The history of the town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye has long been linked to the presence of the château, which was a regular residence of the kings of France, though its importance diminished as a result of Louis XIV's move to Versailles, and to the forest, a former royal hunting ground.
A little history
There are few prehistoric remains apart from some flint tools found on the plateau d'Hennemont, in the forêt de Laye, formerly known as Lida, the northern part of the forêt d'Yveline, which was itself the northern part of the ancient forest of the Carnutes or of the diocese of Chartres. A Gaulish road followed the ru de Buzot and in the forest a Gaulish coin entitled "le cheval solaire et le loup mangeur de lune" was found in 1999. A Roman road climbed onto the plateau along the route of the rues Schnapper, Bergette and Galliéni, Président-Roosevelt.
