Vélizy-Villacoublay is a French commune situated in the département of Yvelines in the Île-de-France region, three kilometres to the east of Versailles and nine from Paris. A pioneering town in aviation, an industrial and services town, home to numerous company head offices, it forms the northern part of the Paris-Saclay scientific and technological hub, which has been under development since 2010. Since 1 January 2016, it has been part of Versailles Grand Parc.
A little history
In former times Vélizy was no more than a simple hamlet on the plateau above the village of Ursine, a village that lay in the midst of woods. Ursine, or Ursines, was established as a parish in the 13th century. The territory was made up of three distinct lordships, Vélizy, Villacoublay and Ursine, mentioned as early as the 11th century, and owned, in the Middle Ages, by the Hôtel-Dieu de Notre-Dame de Paris. It was then the Louvois family, already owners of the lordships of Chaville and Meudon, who progressively acquired these territories.
