The town is a member of the intercommunality Val de Garonne Agglomération. Its urban unit comprises 2 communes and brings together 10,323 inhabitants (2023).
A little history
Like the Agenais, Tonneins formed part of Celtic Gaul, then of the duchy of Gascogne, and of the comté de Toulouse (the Agenais was disputed between Toulouse (comté then parlement) and Bordeaux/Gascogne). From the 12th century until 1790, the town was divided into two distinct seigneuries separated by the entre-deux-bourgs. These were Tonneins-Dessus (le Petit-Tonneins, le bourg Saint-Pierre) upstream on the Garonne, and Tonneins-Dessous (le Grand-Tonneins, le bourg Notre-Dame) downstream.
