A little history
A Gallo-Roman villa situated at la Garenne was excavated there in 1832 under the direction of the sculptor-forger Maximilien Théodore Chrétin, who concocted the fiction of an imperial city from the time of the Tetrici with the complicity of the Toulousain Du Mège. The city reached its peak in the 16th century, when the seigneurs d'Albret, who had settled there around the 11th century (having come from Labrit, in the Landes) became kings of Navarre following the marriage of Jean III d'Albret to Catherine de Foix in 1484. Shortly afterwards, their son Henri II d'Albret married Marguerite d'Angoulême in 1527, the sister of François Ier and one of the first writers in the French language (Heptaméron).
